This series exploring a fascinating shape: the fifteenth pentagon to “tile the plane.” For decades, mathematicians believed that only 14 irregular pentagons could tessellate in order to fill a plane with no overlapping portions. In 2015, a team of mathematicians at the University of Washington, Bothell discovered the fifteenth pentagon to tile the plane. This series introduces random, organic facets to the symmetrical nature of the tessellating pattern, creating an illusion that feels simultaneously calming and a bit unpredictable.
